I just came back from a week in LA for the Writers and Illustrators of the Future workshop and awards ceremony. I’ll write a detailed report on the trip at a later point. For now, I’d simply note that one of the coolest aspects is that the twelve winning artists are assigned a story from one of the twelve winning authors at random. They then produce artwork to match the story (they get 20 days), and that piece is used to determine the illustrator Grand Prize.
My artist – Quinlan Septer (who, for mine, should have received an award for his name alone), produced the picture below for my winning entry, Twelve Minutes to Vinh Quang. It is excellent.
Quinlan didn’t win unfortunately, but he must have given the judges something to think about. His website is here, and his work on Deviantart is here, if you’re interested (and you should be).
Writers of the Future Volume 31 is available for pre-order here (it comes out May 4th) The artwork is gorgeous (and in colour) and the stories ain’t half bad, either.
