I have some news (yes, it’s a book deal)

Well, a few short weeks after I write an article about dealing with failure and rejection as a writer, the precise opposite happens. Maybe the best thing that can happen: an offer from a major publisher (okay, technically the very best thing that can happen is a book deal, a million dollar option from a major film studio, and an offer to live in Japan for the next two years to research the next novel. But let’s not get greedy here).

Titan Books has picked up my debut novel, Thirty-Six Streets. The press release gives the details. I started writing it right after I came back from Vietnam in around mid-2016, and as you’d expect, the story is based in Hanoi (with some flashbacks to Australia). I completed it in mid-2018 – though I nearly gave up on it for a few months in the middle of that two year period. I then spent another year refining it in the final phases of my PhD, and lastly, working on it with my agent, John Jarrold. Nothing comes easy in this business.

It was sent out into the world over a year ago, and to be honest, I wasn’t sure if it was ever going to come back.

Anyway, I’m fucking chuffed, as you’d imagine.
